MONTENEGRO

The relationship between the Marmara Group Foundation and Montenegro is at the highest level. After Montenegro gained its independence, the first Honorary Consul General it appointed abroad was Dr Akkan Suver, President of Marmara Group Foundation. Therefore, the State of Montenegro trusted Dr Akkan Suver and gave him the title of ‘Honorary Consul General of Montenegro’ in Istanbul. The Marmara Group Foundation is grateful to Milan Rocen, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Filip Vujanovic, former President of Montenegro and Jusuf Kalemporovic, former Minister of Interior of Montenegro for their contribution to the mission.

Serbia and Montenegro were a single state when Filip Vujanovic was elected President. During his presidency, Montenegro gained independence after a referendum in 2006. This unification was peaceful and quiet. The fact that it was so quickly recognized internationally is an indication of the successful foreign policy conducted by Filip Vujanovic and his colleagues. Filip Vujanovic served as a successful president and led Montenegro to become the 29th member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), alongside Albania and Croatia. Becoming a member of NATO was one of Montenegro's two goals after gaining independence. The second goal is Montenegro's membership to the European Union.

Montenegro, which has been participating in the Eurasian Economic Summits of the Marmara Group Foundation at the level of President, Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for years, has also ensured the translation and publication of the book Montenegro written by Dr Akkan Suver in Montenegrin language. Marmara Group Foundation is grateful to President Filip Vujanovic for appointing Dr Akkan Suver as the first Honorary Consul General of Montenegro.

Dr Akkan Suver's term as Honorary Consul General of Istanbul ended on 31.12.2019 with the opening of the official Consulate General in Istanbul. On 26 November 2020, the State of Montenegro was kind enough to reappoint Dr. Akkan Suver as Honorary Consul General to Balıkesir. On 5 March 2021, the State of Montenegro granted Dr Akkan Suver a Montenegrin Passport and Montenegrin Citizenship. At the same ceremony, Dr Akkan Suver was presented with the Montenegro Medal of Merit. Montenegro has an important place in the life of the Marmara Group Foundation.
