Today is the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence. On May 19, 1919, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk went to Samsun to start the national struggle for independence. This is the beginning date of the modern Turkish Republic.

The Great Turkish Nation has named this day as the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day.
