“The Importance of Peace in Global Cooperation”

The year 2023 is the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye. The Marmara Group Foundation will address the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye and its national and international aspects at the 26th Eurasian Economic Summit. At the 26th Eurasian Economic Summit, we will discuss through contemporary meeting with history the founding philosophy, basic principles, revolutions and economic structure of the Republic of Türkiye, which with the visionary leader Atatürk, has been a civilization project. With the determination to protect the Republic of Türkiye, which is the product of sophisticated Turkish culture and heroism and the most valuable treasure of the future of the honorable Turk, we say “To many more centuries!” as the Marmara Group Foundation. While discussing the importance of peace in global cooperation at the 26th Eurasian Economic Summit, we will also bring up the rightness of Great Atatürk’s saying "Peace at home, peace in the world" at the 26th Eurasian Economic Summit, both nationally and internationally. Democracy is the basic principle of the Republic of Türkiye, which Atatürk introduced as "My greatest work is the Republic". The Republic of Türkiye was established in the light of reason and science. The foundations of the Republic of Türkiye, as a modern, contemporary and civilized state composed of democratic, secular, social and legal principles, were laid a century ago. At the 26th Eurasian Economic Summit, we will try to explain the magnificent past of the Republic of Türkiye to our foreign guests who will visit our country with care and attention. As the Marmara Group Foundation and the Eurasian Economic Summits, we attach great importance to the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye. We believe that Türkiye’s 100-year-old republican philosophy is a philosophy of peace. The Republic will always rise and live forever in the hands of modern, educated, self-sacrificing young people who know the value of freedom and independence. Long live the Republic!

On the other hand, this year is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Azerbaijan’s National Leader Heydar Aliyev, who proclaimed the existence of free and independent Azerbaijan to the world, laid the foundations of unity and solidarity in the Turkic World, brought stability to the Caucasus geography, and was one of the shareholders in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Summits in 1998. The Marmara Group Foundation will live up to his expectations.

The need for peace for sustainable stability and development draws an increasing graph today. Once again today, we are witnessing the formation of a structure that moves away from peace, justice and societies that embrace everyone. It’s not just war that threatens societies! Murders, human and child trafficking, organized crime, arms trafficking, black money, incitement to violence, irregular migration and discriminatory laws affect our planet. In addition, infectious diseases pose a separate threat to countries. Our need to build societies that will embrace everyone is gaining more and more importance with each passing day. At the 26th Eurasian Economic Summit, we will open to discussion with experts on the subject, our belief that we can only address our need for a dignified life in peace, a just and respectful order for all only through global cooperation.

A century has passed since the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye. During this time, important developments occurred in the thoughts and lifestyle of the Anatolian Turkish Society that would not fit into centuries. Depending on these developments, despite all the external and internal blocking attempts, changes towards innovation, prosperity and future continued. The integrity of the homeland, the unity and solidarity of the nation was preserved. The modernization efforts of all state institutions and organizations with their interests and relations gained continuity. Türkiye has acquired the characteristics of an Asian, European, Caucasian, Middle Eastern, Balkan, Black Sea and Mediterranean country in terms of its geographical location, geopolitical, geoeconomic characteristics, national power elements, international ties and relations. The World State began to progress rapidly towards realizing its aspirations and expectations. Against the meaningless words and actions that do not take into account the thoughts and tendencies of the nation, their conscience and beliefs, and their emulation of foreign political and economic approaches, the consciousness of "State" and "having the State" and the idea of " the Greatness of the State" lived with an increasing need and necessity in Anatolian Turkish people and society. The foundation of all this was laid a century ago by a leader in the land we live in. In order to save the destiny of the Turkish nation from extinction like the destiny of the Ottoman Empire, he set out with his nation and started the National Struggle for full independence. Our republic is the product and inevitable result of this struggle. This struggle determined the founding philosophy of the newly established Turkish Republic. The Anatolian enlightenment, the unity of the nation, and the civic consciousness began with that great struggle. Without knowing that period, we cannot understand today, we cannot see tomorrow. The founding process of the modern Turkish Republic begins with the date of 19 May 1919, when Mustafa Kemal Pasha landed in Samsun. As he himself stated, the idea of establishing a modern state was in his mind while he was going to Samsun. He applied this thought step by step and kept this thought to himself as a secret. In this respect, the establishment of the Turkish Republic took place in two stages;

-First, the signing of an agreement that will ensure the liberation of the occupied lands and independence,

-The second was to abolish the old state structure and establish a new and modern state.

These two stages are not strictly separated from each other. Mustafa Kemal Pasha, who is the architect and implementer of this idea, and his friends started the transformation since the liberation process and laid the foundations of a new state with their work while the wars were still going on. Mustafa Kemal had developed the idea of establishing a modern state since his youth. Atatürk was born in a historical time. There were two major events that determined that period. One is the French Revolution, the other is the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire and the acceleration of its collapse. Mustafa Kemal got the first information about the French Revolution during his student years, and then, thanks to the wideness of his field of interest, reading pleasure and the foreign language he learned, he had the opportunity to follow the main lines of thought of the period and what was happening in the world. In addition, as a young military officer working in different regions and conditions, he saw with his own eyes how a whole empire collapsed. This historical turn led Mustafa Kemal to consider the establishment of a new Türkiye to replace the collapsing Ottoman Empire and formed the basis of his thought. Meanwhile, developments were already taking place in Europe that put this idea into action and encouraged Mustafa Kemal. With the First World War, the Russian Tsardom, the German Empire, the Austrian and Hungarian Empires were destroyed and new republics were established. In the changing European administrative system, the future of the Ottoman Empire was one of the most emphasized issues. Of course, Turkish intellectuals were also paying attention to this issue and were looking for various solutions. However, all of them were looking for a solution around the Ottoman Sultanate. Apart from this, no one was able to express openly to create a new state structure. For the intellectuals of the Ottoman Empire, who lived under the economic and political pressure of the great Powers for the past fifty years, the principle of full independence was an important problem that needed to be resolved. The idea of full independence came to the fore during the armistice period due to the pressures of the minorities and the victors. Full independence meant full independence and full freedom in all areas of politics, finance, economy, law, military and culture. Mustafa Kemal Pasha reviewed the initiatives and scattered ideas that had started two hundred years before him and created a new system that would ensure the realization of change. Mustafa Kemal Pasha successfully fulfilled a very important historical task between end of an era and beginning of an era, he carried out and implemented a liberation program he followed with determination, without making a slightest concession in its main lines. The new system to be created;

-Its primary purpose is to modernize,

-The second aim is to develop, thus to reach the level of contemporary civilization.

-While doing these, national unity will be ensured, state authority will be established, and equality among the people will be protected. The Republic of Türkiye, which was founded with these thoughts, brought, above all, a very comprehensive and solid peace to the region where it was founded. It gave an example of the transition from a single party to a multi-party democratic regime, perhaps the only example in the world. It established and operated its political institutions in a Western sense. While these were being done, it was frequently emphasized that the most appropriate form of government for the Turkish Nation was the Republic and that the newly established state was a people’s state. Mustafa Kemal Pasha’s most used word was "Civilization". Civilization, “being civilized” is his starting point. He reveals the reality of civilization with the following words in 1924: “Civilization will raise the Republic. The Turkish Revolution will ensure the position we deserve in the world of civilization.” According to him, the main reason for our suffering is our foreignness to the course of the world. For this reason, it was necessary to bring the nation to the blessings of civilization as soon as possible. The civilizationism of the Turkish Revolution is a change in structure. Mustafa Kemal described teachers as "respectable pioneers of our future liberation". He told the teachers who came to visit him in Bursa right after the Great Victory, “The point we have reached today is not real liberation. Our savior in the political, social and cultural life and intellectual education of our nation will be science and enlightenment".

More concrete steps were taken in this regard before and especially after the proclamation of the Republic. Before the proclamation of the Republic, a national education circular letter was published. This circular is also known as the Unification of Education. The most important provisions of the National Education can be summarized as follows: To bring national and modern education to the farthest corners of the country by eliminating ignorance, to raise new generations according to the needs of the future, to equip young people with a very strong intellectual and unshakable character in terms of science and morality, to prepare minds that will not leave the country economically enslaved, to endow the youth with the idea of work and the means of production, to raise nationalist, democrat, revolutionary and secular republic citizens, to ensure that those who leave secondary schools, which are life schools, can look at life with confidence, to be strong and determined everywhere, and to raise responsible, self-confident citizens who know how to protect their rights. Bringing education policies to a modern level was the most important issue for the Republic of Türkiye. It was only possible for the young generations to comprehend the logic of the newly established republic only if the education system was created in line with the same views. Education was also a necessary element for the survival of the young republic. Another important document showing the character of the newly established state is the decisions of the Economic Union, which were unanimously accepted by the delegates at the Izmir Economy Congress held between 17 February and 4 March 1923. The principles of the Economic Union, accepted by the first Turkish Economy Congress, convened in İzmir with the participation of 1135 delegates selected from the agriculture, industry, trade and workers groups of all of Türkiye, necessitated the human will to be the basis of all kinds of social, economic, political and legal formations. Atatürk stated that in order for the Turkish nation to attain real and definitive liberation, it is necessary to rely on two principles. The first of these, National Borders, is a principle that ensures the full independence of the nation and therefore eliminates all the reasons that prevent the development of its economy and stops them from happening again. The second one, the Constitution, is the law that states that the sovereignty will remain in the hands of the nation throughout the life of this new state. On the basis of full independence, it establishes an absolute connection between "national sovereignty" and "economic sovereignty" and says "The sovereignty of the nation should be crowned with sovereignty in the economy". The Republic of Türkiye, which was founded with these thoughts, has been fighting to maintain its existence as a democratic state of law while increasing its importance day by day in its geography without compromising itsnational independence. The instability of the Middle East and the political and economic experiences of the states established in this region clearly show the success of the founding philosophy of the Republic of Türkiye. Turks are determined to keep the philosophy of "everlasting state" alive with the Republic of Türkiye. We have established the Republic of Türkiye in line with these principles and these goals. Despite all the internal and external obstacles, we are determined to walk toward the same goals.

Happy Republic Day in the 100th Anniversary of the Republic!

To many more centuries!
