PRIME MINISTER ERDOGAN GUEST-SPEAKER IN MARMARA GROUP FOUNDATION MEETING

The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan joined the Marmara Group Foundation Meeting in Istanbul as the guest speaker.

At the start of his speech, Erdogan underlined that Turkey has been pursuing a proactive foreign policy and taking initiatives for the last four years. Stating that the relations with the neigboring countries has improved considerably, Erdogan added that Turkey has become a country which could contribute to the stability and peace and act as a mediator in the region.

On the Cyprus issue, the Prime Minister said that the economic and social consolidation was essential for a solution. Erdogan added that the international community has started to recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a separate entity.

Speaking on the economic achievements of his government, Erdogan said that Turkey has achieved a breakthrough in economy, and that Turkey has succeeded to attain unprecedented figures in foreign trade volume and foreign investments.

In his speech on Turkey-EU relations, Erdogan said that they haven’t changed their EU policy and that Turkey would continue to pursue full membership. Erdogan continued as follows: “Working for the EU membership doesn’t mean we will turn our back to other regions. Sooner or later, Turkey will make the EU achieve this opening. There is no country other than Turkey which could bring the East-West compromise to the EU.”

Erdogan said that they were targeting one trillion dollars of GNP, 250 billion dollars of foreign trade volume and 10.000 dollars of per capita income by 2013.

At the end of the meeting, the President of the Marmara Group Foundation, Dr. Akkan Suver gave a present to Prime Minister Erdogan on behalf of the Marmara Group Foundation.
