ECONOMIC SUMMIT

JOINT
COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE TENTH SESSION OF THE
EURASIA ECONOMIC SUMMIT
The Joint Communiqué of
the Tenth Session of the Eurasia
Economic Summit, which was organized by
the Marmara Group Foundation between 2-4
May 2007 in Ýstanbul with the
participation of 4 former presidents, 18
cabinet ministers and 5 members of
parliament from a total of 29 countries,
is released.
* Topics concerning free market economy,
energy, industry, economics and tourism
were primarily discussed in the Summit
which has been taking place continuously
for the last ten years.
* The security of the Samsun-Ceyhan
Pipeline Project was evaluated from the
perspective of energy security and its
importance as a vital element of the
economy and national security was
underlined.
* The construction of new ports and
dockyards and the preparation of a
master plan for the region were
suggested considering that the port of
Ceyhan would play a key role in the
distribution of oil and natural gas and
that the region would be a major energy
terminal in the near future.
* On the second day, in the economy
session, it was stressed that though
globally the rich is becoming richer and
their number is continuously growing,
the poverty in the Caucasus, the Balkans
and the Central Asia is increasing. On
the other hand, it was demonstrated by
data that 2% of the world population
possessed half of the global wealth
generated by industry, finance and
immovable properties, while the share of
the poor was only 1% of that wealth.
* The need to set targets for the
reduction in greenhouse gases which were
causing climate changes in the Caucasus,
the Balkans and Europe was also
underlined.
* On the third day of the Summit, the
importance of diaspora was elaborated.
It was highlighted that the European
Union was in demonstration of double
standards towards Turkey and that the EU
is unjustifiably deploying every effort
to criticize the Turkish Armed Forces,
which traditionally guarantees the unity
and territorial integrity of Turkey.
* The importance of focusing on energy
issues during the course of future
Eurasia Economic Summits was also
highlighted.
* With regard to the global development
in the tourism sector, it was stressed
that under the guidance and leadership
of Turkey, the Caucasian and Central
Asian countries should embark on
training projects in tourism |
